We let a group of children choose what they preferred to play with out of a wide range of choices and this Kitchenphonics Range of Kitchen Units drew the most attention and even brought objections when we tried to encourage the children to try other pieces of equipment.

We made them out of brightly coloured HDPE from recycled waste plastic such as milk bottle cartons, and the wood looking bits are actually extruded recycled polystyrene, a synthetic wood with the same density and weight as some South American hard woods.
